Mrs. Agnes Rogers Roberts

Agnes Rogers Roberts, 93, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at the Givens Health Center. She was the beloved wife of the late George M. Roberts, Sr. and had resided in Buncombe County for almost 70 years. Mrs. Roberts was born April 2, 1919 in Henderson County, North Carolina, the only child of the late Auda Rogers and the late Belle Justus Rogers. She graduated from Edneyville High School in 1937. In 1938, she received a secretarial degree from Blanton’s Business College in Asheville, NC. After graduating, Agnes was employed at Sally’s Drug Store in Asheville and there met her future husband Mr. George Roberts, a loyal customer. Agnes and George were married January 16, 1944, and enjoyed 67 years together. Mrs. Roberts also worked as office manager of Talman Office Supplies for 12 years. In 1961 she became the school secretary for Bell Elementary School and later Haw Creek Elementary School. She retired from Haw Creek Elementary School after 17 years with the Buncombe County School System. During retirement, Mrs. Roberts enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, and playing with her beloved dachshund Mindy. She is well known for her delicious “snicker-doodle” cookies! Mrs. Roberts was a member of Central United Methodist Church for over 50 years where she also was a member of the Deborah Circle, serving as treasurer for 16 years and secretary for 3 years. She was a devoted member of the Covenant Sunday School Class. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Roberts Durity and a son-in-law, G. Harry Durity of Asheville; a stepson George Roberts Jr. and his wife, Roberta Roberts of Summerfield, NC, sisters-in-law, Phyllis Roberts Elliot and Montrose Simmons Roberts; grandchildren, Adam Durity, Laura Durity, Janice Roberts Hills, Michael Roberts, Scott Roberts and five great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Friday, December 14 at 11:00 am at Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church Street, Asheville, N.C. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Green Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church Street, Asheville, NC 28801 or to Givens Estates, 400 Wesley Drive, Asheville, NC 28803.
