Mrs. Aletheria Hanzas "Libby" Chakales

Our loving mother, Aletheria (Libby) Chakales, daughter of Constantine and Victoria Hanzas, fell asleep in the Lord, July 9, 2014, at her home in Asheville. Born June 11, 1921, she was the fifth of eight children, and was preceded in death by her parents, six of her brothers and sister, and her beloved husband, James P. (Jimmy) Chakales. Mrs. Chakales enjoyed a rich and wonderful life throughout her 93 years, especially through her love of music and politics, which she often brought together in her role as hostess extraordinaire. She worked for a nearly 20 years in the office of the Buncombe County Register of Deeds and was active in the Democratic Party for much of her life, as well as with the Does, the women’s branch of the B.P.O. Elks service organization. Born into one of the founding families of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Mrs. Chakales was heavily involved in the life of the church, serving as the first president of the Daughters of Penelope, choir director, member of the Philoptochos and active in many other capacities. She was also a highly talented musician who played piano, violin, clarinet, guitar, and xylophone. She started her high-school orchestra and played clarinet in its marching band. A member of the National Honor Society, she was offered scholarships to two music conservatories, though her education was interrupted by World War II. Mrs. Chakales is survived by her three children, Charlotte McCarty (Peter) of Los Angeles, CA, Peter Chakales (Ann) of Atlanta, GA, and Victoria Chakales of Asheville; and by four grandchildren, John T. and James P. McCarty of Los Angeles and Pressley Ann and Taylor James Chakales of Atlanta; her brother Agamemnon Hanzas of Potomac, Maryland, and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. The viewing and Trisagion service will be held Sunday, July 13, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 227 Cumberland Ave. Viewing will be at the church at 6:00 p.m., with the service beginning promptly at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place Monday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity, followed by interment at Riverside Cemetery. The family will host a memorial luncheon at Holy Trinity’s Hellenic Hall after the burial. Pallbearers are grandsons John Thomas McCarty, James Peter McCarty, and Taylor James Chakales; nephew George Psoinos of Palm Beach, Florida; and great-nephews John Zouzoukis of Atlanta, and Rick Hoyle, George Tsiros, and Gus Stamatiades all of Asheville, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
