Dorothy Stickney

Dorothy Mathews Stickney passed away on February 26, 2023, in Asheville, NC. She was a resident of Asheville and Fripp Island, SC. Dorothy was born in Durham, NC, on January 8, 1931, to parents, Edward Gilmer Mathews and Alice Morton Mathews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James W. Stickney III, who passed away on the same date (February 26) in 2005, and by her sister, Miriam M. Ray. She is survived by sisters: Virginia M. Mitchell of Black Mountain, NC, and Marilyn M. Buist of Charleston, SC; sons: James W. Stickney IV (Robin) and Samuel M. Stickney (Lisa); daughter, MaryAlice S. Bell (Danny), all of Asheville; seven grandchildren – Lloyd U. Hammarlund Jr. (Breigh), Gene S. Arthur, James W. Stickney V, Teresa Stickney, Anna S. Carpenter (Wyatt), Kate D. Stickney and Jack M. Stickney; four great grandchildren (Iris, Oona, Oscar, and baby boy Easton on the way). She is also survived by five beloved step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and many dear nieces and nephews. A life-long Ashevillean, Dottie was immersively engaged with her family, friends, and community. She graduated from St. Genevieve’s of The Pines and attended Duke University. She served on the boards of the Girl Scouts, YWCA, and Junior League of Asheville. She was a Regional Chairman of Volunteers for the American Red Cross. She taught Sunday School at Arden Presbyterian Church and led the Children’s Program in Bible Study Fellowship. Dottie also worked as a mentor in the Latch-Key Children’s Program of Buncombe County. She was a longtime member of the Town and Country Garden Club and numerous book clubs. Dottie was an avid reader and enjoyed swimming, tennis, snow skiing, gardening, cards, and poetry. Dorothy Stickney was a benevolent perfect storm, mixing in her natural warmth with an outsized personality and irresistible will. Her ability to engage, bond with, and ultimately inspire loyalty from everyone she met, was legendary. Dottie was a devout Christian and she had no doubt about where she would be spending eternity. Her greatest hope was that friends and family would be joining her there. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Asheville at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2023, with interment to follow at Lewis Memorial Park. Rev. Father Richard Rowe will be officiating. A reception with the family will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Morris Funeral & Cremation Care, 304 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the staff at Brooks Howell Home for their loving care in her final days.
