John "Jack" D. Duggan

John "Jack" Duggan, 66, of Barnardsville, passed away of a heart attack on Saturday, July 21, 2018. A native of Brooklyn, NY, John traveled widely with the Navy before settling in the Tidewater area of Virginia in 1971. These travels helped him develop the deep affection for the sea so apparent in his marine photography. His love of boats, along with time spent as a professional boat-builder and renovator, gave him the thorough understanding of hull form and function so evident in his photographic series on boats and working docks. His work is displayed in private collections throughout the United States, as well as in several galleries along the East Coast. He also completed a series of one-man shows. John was very involved in his community in various capacities over the years, serving as Vice President of the Port Norfolk Civic League in Portsmouth, Virginia and then as Treasurer of Green Ridge Falls HOA in Barnardsville, North Carolina. He loved spending time outside in any capacity, whether it be chopping wood, designing and planning structures (plant stands, archery stands, and tables) and bringing them to life with his own hands, riding his motorcycle, or being out in the open water on a boat. John’s love of boats extended to his living arrangements, as well, and he and his beloved wife Molly spent several years living on a beautiful houseboat, the Molly D. John is preceded in death by his parents, Donald B. Duggan and Anna Markey Duggan. He is survived by his wife, Molly Duggan of Barnardsville, NC; son, Ryan Duggan of Chesapeake, VA; stepdaughters, Erin Epperson of Chicago, IL, Kristin Brown of Virginia Beach, VA, and Kerry Beverley of Dunn, NC; grandson-to-be, Jacob Beverley of Dunn, NC; and siblings, Bill Duggan of Brooklyn, NY (Mary Kris Kelly, wife), Betty Duggan of Brooklyn, NY (Hugh Kelly, husband), Peter Duggan of Cape Coral, FL (Deirdre Duggan, wife), Donald Duggan of Brooklyn, NY (Elisa Duggan, wife), Marian Duggan-Markos of Southwick, MA (Phillip Markos, husband), and Rita Duggan of Traveler’s Rest, SC. The family will receive friends from 10:00AM until 2:00PM on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at the funeral home. A funeral will be held at 10:00AM on Friday, July 27, 2018 at the funeral home. The service will be officiated by Beth Kelly, John’s niece. Cremation will take place at a later time. John had recently battled prostate cancer and completed treatment at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America earlier this year. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Atlanta: 600 Celebrate Life Parkway, Newnan, GA 30265.
