Charles Alan Clogston

Charles A. Clogston, 80, of Asheville, NC, passed away at his continuing care facility, Deerfield, on May 26, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles M. Clogston and Margaret A. Clogston, and wife of 51 years, Patricia. He is survived by sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and Tom Engquist, Nieces and Nephews, Karen and Jeff Basen-Engquist, Lisa and Bob Pollard, Anup and David Engquist. He is also survived by great nieces and nephews, Ian and Kaity Pollard, Charlie Pollard and Natalie Kudrle, Emma Basen-Engquist, and Serena and Mina Engquist. Charles was born in Minneapolis, MN, on September 7, 1943. He attended Mounds View High School and graduated in 1961. He attended Augsburg College and then the University of Minnesota. He then enlisted in the Army and received an Honorable Discharge in September 1967. He returned to the University of Minnesota and received a bachelor's degree in business administration with Magna Cum Laude honors. He worked for Cargill Inc. for 33 years, starting as an accountant and ending up as a controller and division vice president, working primarily with Latin America after four years living and working in Brazil. He developed experience working with countries with volatile currencies and led seminars for Eastern Europe and several countries in Asia. Upon retiring and moving to Asheville in 2001, Charles used his financial experience when he became Treasurer for the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, guiding the club through some tax issues, converting it to a "charitable non-profit" status, and also starting the flattest 100-mile ride in our mountains. He became an elder in Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, serving on the session and finance council. He continues on the Finance Committee for Mountain True, a grassroots environment organization in Western North Carolina. The most fulfilling volunteer effort was the 5 young people for whom he became a mentor. This was not part of any program, they just showed up needing some help. He always told them his advice is free and worth every penny they paid. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on June 29 at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 789 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, NC. Interment will take place at 11 am on August 10 at Lakewood Cemetery, 3600 Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, MN.
