Consuelo "Connie" Gonzalez Bird

Consuelo “Connie” Gonzalez Bird passed from this world into Heaven to be with Jesus on April 30, 2024, after a short and unexpected illness. She was born on May 19, 1939 in Bogota, Colombia and immigrated to Miami, FL in 1952. At that time, she did not speak English but, even so, was able to complete high school and obtain a wonderful job she enjoyed for many years at McCaughan Mortgage Company in Coral Gables. In 1980, she moved to Weaverville, NC with her husband and children and became the proud owner of The Pines Cottages. She was active in managing 15 vacation cabins for 20 years before retiring in 2001. Connie was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church in Asheville for 44 years. She was an extremely generous, loving, compassionate, and thoughtful woman who helped others and never spoke a mean word about anyone. She enjoyed volunteering and through the years was a member of the Stephen Ministry, a driver for Meals on Wheels and a Friendly Visitor through the Council on Aging for Buncombe County. She also enjoyed helping in various ways St. Eugene’s. She befriended many elderly ladies through her volunteer activities and would assist them weekly with chores, appointments or whatever they needed. Many became dear friends. Connie enjoyed spending quality time with her family and friends, caring for her plants and flowers since she had a “green” thumb, praying for those in need, and traveling with her husband in their RV to places far and wide. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Gayland Glen Bird. Left behind to remember her with love and admiration are her two children, Mark Allen Bird and wife, Kim, of Danville, VA and Christine Bird Luna and husband, Martin, of Weaverville, NC, in addition to her sister, Leonor Repp, and brothers, Fernando and George Rodriguez, plus many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She also leaves behind six grandchildren who affectionately called her “Ita”: Jessica, Daniel, Robbie, and Sophia Luna; and Joshua Bird and wife, Jenna, and Samuel Bird. She was extremely proud of all of them and would tell everyone about their accomplishments and endeavors. A funeral mass will be celebrated on June 7, 2024 at 11 am at St. Eugene Catholic Church, 72 Culvern Street, Asheville, NC 28804. It will also be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person.
