Mrs. Irene Jordan Scarborough

Irene Jordan Scarborough, 78, of Asheville, NC died Monday, December 14, 2009 at her home. A native of Tabor City, NC. A graduate of Tabor City High School and McCleod Infirmary School of Nursing in Florence, SC, she attended Mars Hill College. As a registered nurse, Mrs. Scarborough worked in the diabetic clinic at Memorial Mission Hospital, the American Red Cross Blood program and volunteered for numerous organizations including the Blue Ridge Mental Health Center, Rape Crisis Center, Hospice and the American Cancer Society. She was named Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1965 and held position in the Southern Pines Junior Women’s Club, Leaf and Petal Garden Club, Buncombe County Board of Health, Caring for Children Board and PEO Chapter A. C. She was also a 42 year member of Central United Methodist Church and active in United Methodist Women, Parish Nurse Committee and Covenant Class. Irene’s great joy in life was her family. She was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend that we will carry in our hearts forever. God gave her a very special gift, of not only showing love to everyone she met, but also the ability for others to see and feel her love and kindness the instant they met her. She was always ready with a compliment in hand. She was a remarkable woman with a kind and caring heart who was beautiful in every sense of the word. Her inner strength and her faith in God carried her through life. Her family has been blessed by her wisdom, grace, gentleness and compassion. She was a role model and an inspiration to her family and friends. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 20, 2009 in the Sanctuary of Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church Street, with Reverends Rob Blackburn and Christy Matlick officiating. Viewing will be from 10:00 – 11:00 AM in the Chapel. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, William “Buddy” L. Scarborough; three daughters, Susan Robinson and her husband Ross of Asheville, Sharon Glisson and her husband, Charlie of Melbourne, Florida and Mary Kathryn Green and her husband, Rocky of Fort Mill, SC; two sons, William Scarborough and his wife, Martha who reside in Singapore and David Scarborough of Durham, NC and grandchildren, Joshua Robinson, Jesse Scarborough, Austin Green, Connor Green, Kevin Glisson, Melanie Hunter and Jim Robinson. The family wishes to thank the nurses, social workers and doctors associated with Care Partners Hospice in Asheville for the outstanding care and empathy over the last year.
