Mrs. Joan Frances Gold

Joan Francis Gold, 80, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2014 at her home in Weaverville, NC. Born in 1934 in Buffalo, NY she was the daughter of the late Dorothy (Travers) and Merritt Haley. Joan was raised and educated in Buffalo, NY and received her Bachelors of Science in Education and Master Degree from Buffalo State Teachers College where she was a member of Delta Sigma Epsilon. After graduation she moved to Niagara Falls, NY where she taught Home Economics until she married the late James F. Showers in 1957 and there they raised their three children. Mrs. Gold worked as a Registered Dietician at the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for over twenty years. She married the late Martin Gold in 1986 and they retired to the Asheville area in 1995 where she lived until her death. Joan, will be lovingly remembered as devoted mother, grandmother, wife and as a generous and selfless woman who dedicated her life to serving others in her community. Joan was a committed volunteer for over fifteen years at Mission Medical Center in Asheville working weekly in various capacities and served as a Mission Ambassador. She was a member of the American Quilters Association and worked with Asheville’s Project Linus to create quilts that brought comfort to sick children. Always charitable with her time and her resources, Joan volunteered in a variety of capacities for many charities throughout her life, and up until the time of her death. She loved gardening, history, travel, music and the arts. A member of the Asheville Symphony Guild, she adored the Asheville region and her Reems Creek Community. Her greatest pleasures came from spending time with her children, her grandchildren and her large network of friends both locally and throughout the country. Mrs. Gold is survived by her three children, Tamara (Anthony) Cavaluzzi of Endwell, NY; Julie (Richard) Smith of Cabin John, MD and Jeffrey (Rachelle) Showers of Niagara Falls, NY; her three step-daughters, Barbara (Michael) Goleman, Sheryl (Alan) Yonack and Wendy (Stuart) Bolerjack, eleven grandchildren, Tara (Terry) Brewster, Sarah Smith, Eliza Smith, Olivia Showers and Alexandra Showers; Shaina Goleman, Jake Goleman, David Bolerjack, Matthew Bolerjack, Noah Yonack, Sam Yonack, Sydney Yonack and one great- grandson, Calan James Brewster, one sister, Eileen Muscato of Eden, NY, one brother, M. William Haley of Aurora, OH and sister-in-law, Carol Haley of Jacksonville, FL as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by one brother, the late John (Jack) Haley. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday April 24th at 11:00 a.m. at the Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville.
