Lynette Catherine Mitchel

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” On July 28th, our most gracious and loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, and friend died peacefully at home with her family at the age of 99 after a brief battle with cancer. Her goal was to make it to her 100th birthday, but she missed that milestone by 67 days. Born October 4, 1922, she was a native of Buffalo, NY and the only child of the late John William and Cecilia Catherine Mages. Lynn lived a long and colorful life that began with eight years at St. Margaret’s Elementary School and 4 years at Holy Angels Academy in Buffalo, NY After graduating high school she attended nursing school at Buffalo General Hospital and graduated with a degree as a Registered Nurse in 1943. In 1944 she joined the US Navy, which took her to boot camp USNTS Sampson Naval Base-Training Center in Sampson, NY. Lynn, an exquisite storyteller, loved to tell the story of her swimming the entire length of an Olympic swimming pool with a full pack on her back. With WWII in full force, she spoke of the patriotism in the country and the poster “WE WANT YOU”. There was certainly a love for your country. In 1944, she was transferred to the Naval Convalescent Hospital Asheville, NC. It was at the hospital, which are presently the Kenilworth Apartments, that she met her husband, Jack Mitchel. They married at the conclusion of WWII in 1946 and remained married until the time of Jack’s (Mitch) death in 2016. They remained in Asheville and raised four children Roger Mitchel (Betsy) of Southern Pines, NC, Colleen Mitchel of Charleston, SC, Lynette Rozar (Bob) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Diane Mitchel of Asheville. Six grandchildren Caitlin Mitchel of Greensboro, NC and Willa Mitchel of Los Angeles, CA, Christopher Rozar (Melissa), Sarah Sanderson (Noah), Gregory Rozar, and Nathan Smith, all of Charleston, SC. One great-grandchild, Ana Juliette Rozar also of Charleston, SC. During Lynn’s life she served as president of the Asheville Jaycettes, Asheville Toastmasters, she was a member of the Gardeneirs, an avid tennis player, and later a golfer at the Asheville Country Club. She volunteered her time as both cub scout and girl scout leader and at St, Eugene’s Catholic Church, where she was an active member. She swam 2 days a week at the YMCA, attended classes at Olli, and played bridge twice a month. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Lynn’s honor Friday, August 12, 2022, at 12:00 pm at St. Eugene's Catholic Church, 72 Culvern Street, Asheville, followed by the internment of her ashes at the columbarium. The service will be live streamed on the Saint Eugene website, http://www.steugene.org.
