Dr. Murray Greenspan

Murray Greenspan passed away on August 7 at his home in Swannanoa. Murray was born 11/30/1936 in Brooklyn, New York to David and Martha Greenspan. He graduated from Queens College and in 1971 married the great love of his life, Carol. With their newly-combined family, Murray and Carol became back-to-the-landers in upstate New York. At age 41 Murray felt the call to become a chiropractor and the family moved to Marietta, Georgia. After graduating from Life Chiropractic College in 1981, Murray and family settled in Swannanoa, NC and opened Greenspan Chiropractic in Black Mountain. He continued to practice until his death. Murray was a true Renaissance man of many passions, including wood turning, travelling, cycling, and hiking. He and Carol were active members of Jubilee! and volunteered for many non-profits in the community. He was also member of two men’s groups which brought him great joy. Murray’s love of life and exuberance made him the pivotal member of his family and his community. Murray’s infectious laugh and giant, gentle hands will be sorely missed by his family, friends and patients. Murray was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lee Cohen and his first wife Leah Grandis Coffey. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carol Hoefener Greenspan, his brother Ralph Greenspan (Marilyn) of New York, his sisters Fran Corrado and Fay Walker (Cliff) of Florida; his children Michelle Greenspan (Karen Lockee) of Salem, SC, Kevin Greenspan (Lisa) of Black Mountain, NC, Steve Greenspan of Swannanoa, NC, Phyllis Hinson of Chattanooga, TN, Sue Lynch (Steve) of Rhode Island and David Greenspan (Leah Broker) of Asheville, NC; his grandchildren Adam and Laurel Greenspan; Stephen, Katie and Hannah Lynch; Jonathan (Ann), Michael (Barbara), James (Angela), Matthew, Rachel and Sarah Hinson; and Olivia Greenspan. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 beginning at 12:00pm at Jubilee Church, 46 Wall Street, Asheville, NC 28801 with Minister Howard Hanger presiding.
