Nell Pittman

Nell Morris Pittman, of Asheville, died May 24, 2022, at age 103. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lee Pittman, Jr. Nell attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia (formerly State Teachers College) and National Business College in Roanoke, Virginia. After teaching for four years in her hometown of Bassett, Virginia, she joined the American Red Cross in World War II and was stationed with the 189th General Hospital in France. Following this service, she was employed with the federal government as a secretary for thirty years. The majority of this tenure was with the U.S. Department of Justice in Richmond, VA, and Greensboro, NC. In 1972, she retired as secretary to the late U.S. District Court Judge Hiram H. Ward, Winston-Salem, NC. Nell was a volunteer at Baptist Hospital (Winston-Salem) and later was a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital (Asheville). On retirement, Nell moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where she enjoyed thirteen years. While there, she was very active in the First Presbyterian Church and made many friends. In 1992, she moved to Asheville to be near her only child, Judith Pittman Welder (Smithy), who survives her. Survivors also include two very much loved grandchildren, Callan Welder (Allison) and Maggie Welder (Jennifer), as well as four great-grandchildren, Lily, Eliza, Lucy, and James, whom she adored. Nell was an avid bridge player. She continued to enjoy playing and socializing in the bridge room well into her nineties. Above all else though, she loved her family and especially delighted in her great-grandchildren in her final years. She will be deeply missed by her family, whom she encouraged and inspired to give to those who were less fortunate and to donate to causes that were important to them. A memorial service will be held on July 10 at 3:00 pm at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue, with the Rev. Kelly Belcher officiating.
