Mrs. Nell Elaine Perkins South

Nell Elaine Perkins South passed away peacefully on January 9, 2011 at Givens Health Care in Asheville, North Carolina, Nell, the daughter of the late John Thomas Perkins and Ella Wells Perkins, was born in Collins, Mississippi. Nell was one of eight children. She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, John Thomas South, Jr. Nell graduated from Collins High School. During World War II, she was employed by the War Department as an auditor, stationed at Camp Shelby in Hattisburg, Mississippi. While at Camp Shelby, she met Captain John Thomas South, Jr. They married and after John returned home from WWII, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia. In Atlanta, she became active in the Presbyterian Church, scouting, and the PTA. They moved to Asheville, North Carolina in 1972 and she became involved with the Woodland Hills Bridge Club, The Garden Club, the Woodland Hills Bible Study Group and was involved in the women of the church at First Presbyterian Church where she was awarded the Honorary Life Membership for the Presbyterian Women. She served on the board of directors of Executive Schools, Inc. of North Carolina, South College of Savannah, Georgia, Draughons College of Montgomery, Alabama, and Marsh-Draughon College of Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to her husband, Nell is survived by her three children: John Thomas South, III and wife, Donna, of Savannah, GA, Donna South Davis and husband, Bud, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Stephen A. South and wife, Becky, of Knoxville, TN; her grandchildren: Lorri Ray South of Atlanta, GA, Christopher Edward Kabine of Summerville, SC, Abigail Elaine South of Savannah, GA, Tradd Ashton Kabine of Atlanta, GA, Nicolas Garrett South of Knoxville, TN, Ansley Allison South of Knoxville, TN, and Turner Hogin South of Knoxville, TN; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Asheville. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Burial will be private in Atlanta, GA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 40 Church Street, Asheville, NC 28801 or Eliada Homes, P. O.
