Charley Cooper, 86, peacefully passed away May 8, 2016 at Care Partners Hospice following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 1, 1930 in Madison County, NC. Charley was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and received technical training at A-B Tech. He retired in 1986 from Asheville City Schools as Director of Maintenance. Charley was a faithful and devoted 50-year member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and continued his service at Weaverville United Methodist Church. Charley was a strong man of great faith. He lived his life with kindness, compassion, generosity, love, and most of all, a willingness to serve his family, friends, church and neighbors. Charley and Betty loved to travel both in the United States and abroad. Charley enjoyed reading, studying history and gardening. Predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Vina Cooper; his brother, James Cooper and sisters, Edith Scholwinski and Mary Louise Cooper, Charley is survived by his devoted wife and life partner of 65 years, Betty Hyatt Cooper. Also surviving are special nieces, Anne Gaddy (Rod) and Sally Howell along with Barbara Poole (Bernie) and Mary Cline (Larry); nephew, John Sowell (Pamela) and several great nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 11, 2016 with Lena Brooker officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard. The family acknowledges a heartfelt thank you for wonderful care and support given by Cancer Care of WNC and Care Partners Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Charley’s name to Weaverville UMC, 85 Main Street, Weaverville, NC 28787.
