Gayland Glen Bird
March 26, 1940 - April 18, 2022
Gayland Glen Bird, 82, of Weaverville, NC, passed on to a better life on April 18, 2022 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Louise VanNocker Bird. Glen was born and grew up in Battle Creek, MI and attended Hastings High School before moving to Miami, FL in his mid twenties. As a child he worked long hours on a family farm and learned the value of hard work. He had several jobs which he very much enjoyed including with the Clark Equipment Company and as a salesman for Bertram Yacht Co. He was the successful owner of a dental laboratory in Miami for several years before moving his family to the NC mountains in 1980. Glen was the owner and manager of The Pines Cottages in Asheville for 20 years before retiring to pursue other interests. He looked forward to summer so he could take his wife and RV to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In addition to his numerous accomplishments and interests, Glen was making beer in Asheville before it was “cool”, an avid stamp and coin collector, enjoyed riding his BMW motorcycle way too fast, and learned to play the piano at age 65. He loved his family dearly and his sense of humor will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Consuelo Gonzalez Bird of the home, along with his children, Mark Allen Bird (Kim) of VA and Christine Luna (Martin) of Weaverville, along with his grandchildren, Jessica, Daniel, Robbie, Sophia, Joshua and Samuel and his three sisters, Eleanor, Diane, and Delores. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass at 11am on May 11, 2022 at St. Eugene’s Catholic Church, 72 Culvern St in Asheville, NC.
