George F. Kunkel, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, March 9 at home in Asheville, NC where he has resided for the past 12 years. George was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 7, 1935 to the late Edward and Caroline Kunkel. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Kunkel and sister Caroline Pollard. As a young man, he worked for the James Strates Carnival Company several summers, traveling all across the country meeting many interesting people. George relocated to Miami, FL in 1958 where he attended the University of Miami. He opened the State Farm Insurance office, Kunkel Insurance Agency, on Coral Way in Coral Gables, FL in 1963. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Rod and Reel Fishing Club. He attended the Chapman School of Seamanship in 1998 where he completed a U.S. Coast Guard training course and earned the title Captain. He retired in 2000 and he and his wife relocated to Stuart, LF and enjoyed spending their summers in Cashiers, NC. While in Stuart, he continued his love of boating and fishing in his boat, Katmandu. He became a member of the Stuart Corinthian Yacht Club and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary while living there. He also loved writing short stories and published a collection of them in 2016, “The Kunkel Chronicles; Remembering Brooklyn”. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Maggie, his daughter, Kelly Harwood and son-in-law, Barron, of Corinth, MS, his son, George Kunkel, Jr. of Coral Springs, FL, step-daughters, Hillary Craig and Robin Howie of Asheville, NC, brother Walter Kunkel, Miami, FL, and sisters Arlene Kaye, Aventura, FL and Geri Glancy, Coral Springs, FL as well as five step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Asheville, NC as well as a scattering of ashes at sea in Miami, FL.
