Gerald Smith Echols, 86, of Asheville, died peacefully on Monday, May 31, 2021, at Solace Hospice in Asheville. He was born at home on May 11, 1935, in Asheville, to the late Jack Smith Echols and Sue Duncan Echols. Gerald graduated from Riverside Military Academy, continued his education at Mars Hill College, and completed his degree in psychology at UNC-Asheville. He entered the U.S. Marine Corp in 1956, and served during the Lebanese Conflict. During his working career, Gerald was employed by Sears Roebuck in Asheville, and later Kimberley-Clarke Corporation in Hendersonville. Gerald was married to the late Anne Culbertson Ramsey, and together they reared three children: Smith Echols, Jr., Beth Echols Keoleian, and Daniel Echols. Gerald was preceded in death by his wife Anne, and son Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Beth Keoleian (Greg) and his grandchildren, Sarah Beth, Christian, and Carter; he is also survived by his son Daniel and his grandson, Kai. Gerald was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Freda and Jean; and is survived by five nieces, one nephew, and three grand-nieces. A self-taught naturalist and avid birdwatcher, Gerald enjoyed hiking throughout the Western North Carolina mountains. He loved reading books, riding his motorcycle, and especially spending time with his family. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 19, 2021, from 2:00pm - 3:00pm at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, N.C. Mr. Echols' memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Greenhills Cemetery. Pastor Dianne Johnston of Snow Hill United Methodist Church will be officiating. Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter, P.O. Box 18711, Asheville, N.C. 28814, and designated as being for the "Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary".
