Laura Kate Weaver Thompson, 92, of Asheville went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Brooks-Howell Home, Asheville, NC. Born, January 25, 1924, in Asheville, she was the daughter of the late Ernest G. and Mary C. Weaver. “Katie” spent her life in Asheville, graduating from St. Genevieve of the Pines Business School, then beginning her career with Farmers Federation as assistant to Rev. Clarke. In 1952, Katie met the love of her life, Donald Newlin Thompson while he was in town playing an exhibition baseball game for the Brooklyn Dodgers at the old McCormick Field. They were married in 1954 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where they also celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Throughout her life, she was known for her desire to help others, her sense of humor and her love of people. Her fun loving nature was demonstrated at the Weaverville senior center where she was known as the Queen and life of the party! Katie was a faithful member of St. Paul’s UMC since 1930, serving in numerous capacities throughout the many years. A former Sunday school teacher, she was a member of the Peace Sunday school class. She dearly loved her church and her brothers and sisters in Christ. What a wonderful reunion she is now having! The family would like to thank Debra Mattison, Angela Balnis, Audrey Perry, Gaylen Allen and the staff of the WNC Baptist Retirement Home and Brooks-Howell Home for their excellent care and kindness. She is survived by her son, Tracy W. Thompson and his wife, Sandy; son, John N. Thompson and his wife, Diane Ducharme; granddaughter, Emma Thompson; special friend, Promise Hill, as well as, several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her dogs, Rosie “bright eyes” and Mr. Bear. A celebration of life will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, April 30, 2016 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darryl Dayson officiating. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 12:30 -2:30 PM at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue. Private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s UMC, 233 Hillside St., Asheville, NC 28801.
