John Pericles Stamatiades

John Pericles Stamatiades, a cherished son, husband, father, grandfather, and brother, reposed in the faith on Sunday, October 1, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, from Greek immigrants, John’s journey was one marked by dedication, service, and unwavering love. Following his graduation from high school, John dutifully served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserves for six years with two years of active service overseas. After his military service, he attended the Medical University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy, where he honed his skills and emerged as a dedicated pharmacist. In the late 1960s, he met the love of his life, an Asheville native, Effie Hanzas, and their union on July 19th, 1970, marked the beginning of a remarkable 53-year marriage. Together, they embarked on a new chapter in Asheville, North Carolina, building a life filled with love, family, and shared purpose. John dedicated his career to Eckerd Drugs, where his compassion and expertise touched the lives of countless individuals in the Asheville community. His service extended beyond his professional life, as he was a life-long member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, serving on the Parish Council, and demonstrating a deep connection to his faith. A steadfast volunteer for Meals on Wheels, John’s generosity of spirit and kind-hearted nature left an indelible mark on those he served, enriching the lives of many in need. John was predeceased by his parents, Pericles N. Stamatiades and Stavroula Zerboulidou, as well as his dear brother, Vassos P. Stamatiades. He is survived by his devoted wife, Effie, his sons, Dr. Pericles John Stamatiades (Fay) and Constantine John Stamatiades (Melissa), along with their loving families. His grandchildren, John, Anna, Ellie, and Ari, were a source of immeasurable joy in his life, and his wisdom and affection will forever shape their futures. John’s elder brother, George N. Stamatiades Sr. (Anna), along with a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins, will carry forth his memory with love and admiration. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 6, 2023 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Father Michael Diavatis will officiate. Interment will follow at Lewis Memorial Park with Military Funeral Honors. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to his dedicated physician, Dr. Thomas Renard of Biltmore Medical Associates, the exceptional doctors at Asheville Cardiology, and the compassionate workers from CarePartners and Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 227 Cumberland Avenue, Asheville, NC, 28801, in memory of John P. Stamatiades. John’s legacy of love, service, and compassion will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched. May his memory be eternal.
